Phase 1: Define Yourself Through Your Activities

As a guideline, Identify up to three (3) topics of interest that you see as emerging from your own day-to-day activities in the physical or digital world. The primary consideration for these topics of interest is that the activities you’re focusing on must be ones that you feel define (or at least contribute) to your interests and identity, i.e. how you feel others perceive you.

This process of consideration of “self” and “other” therefore requires a key concept in this course: self-reflection. Select the best activity that you feel can be at least indirectly situated in a virtual environment. For example, if you’re heavily into physical sports, are there aspects of these activities that may take place in a virtual environment, e.g. video games, discussion forums, etc. Some identity-defining activities may take place entirely in the virtual world, others may have both physical and virtual components. Briefly describe your topics of interest and selected activity in a draft document or write up At the end of this process you will select one of these topics as the theme for your Blog.(see Phase 3).

1. Design: The process, the language, and the ideology behind communicating ideas for the real world.

In this area, I would like to take the opportunity to expand on some of the processes, decisions, languages, and ideologies being considered within the realm of problem solving for the end user. Design, itself, is centred around the thought of both content and form -- and more specifically, the underlying structure to what is being said/delivered/used. I will use this context to expand on global design issues that are emerging each and every day.

2. Photography: The idea of Social Networking through a virtual plane.

In this area, I would like to expand on the amalgamation of sharing experiences through pictures and an online community. Pictures have become quite essential in our everyday lives as a way of storytelling and expressing ones emotions through a narrative -- and it is this process that is emerging through the use of online social networks (such as Flickr.com) and being centric to the user's identity (be it in the form of virtual or physical representation). My hopes of venturing into this realm is to uncover some of the fundamental underlying structures in place that secure or rectify ones identity through the use of photographs.

3. Typography: Construction or Deconstruction

In this area, I would like to highlight the use of typography in my every day life and occurances, through the implicit function of signage and way finding. Among global design issues, there lies a paradigm for the way things are interpreted and in many cases, the way in which things are represented. I will use this context to expand on issues not only local but also global that reflect on the construction and deconstruction of typographic relevance.

Interests > Topics

1. Burning the Fat: A losing battle... unless you're super rich.

This subject deals with overweight people desparately trying to lose weight, only to find out they are fighting a losing battle. Topics of interest include the failure of diets, the need for an expensive lifestyle change, and north american food culture as a barrier.

2. Religion: Fact or Fiction?

Those that believe in nothing? Those that have complete faith in something? Who is right? Which group is "correct"? This subject will especially touch on those who are taught to believe in something from birth, without asking the question "why"?

3. The New Dork: Gaming and Technology

I like technology, I like video games, and my idea of a fun friday night involves upgrading my computer. Am I a dork? Probably, right? But....... perhaps not.
